about

Chechnya

Chechnya, used to be part of the Russian Federation (Islamic republics, which also included Kabardino Balkarya, Dagestan and Tatarstan).

There is a very small church in this republic, and the believers have many difficulties to face. Converts to Christianity face harassment by relatives or the authorities when their new faith is discovered. There is intense propagation of Islam, and followers of Islam view Christianity very negatively.

This year people fled Chechnya because the government and their families found out that they were Christians. No Chechen is able to change his faith publicly, and especially women face severe difficulties in this area. Christians try to keep a low profile. When they neglect to do that, the result is discrimination and persecution. Most Chechens consider Christians as orthodox and thus Russian.

An important issue is healing and reconciliation between Russians and Chechens.
